African Expedition Magazine is the “Go To” online publication for anyone planning or dreaming about an adventure on the Dark Continent.
We are actively looking for new articles, photos, and videos to publish online. If you are interested in submitting editorial material, please read the guidelines before submitting any material.
At African Expedition Magazine the operative word is adventure!
We are not interested in a travelogue article taken from a diary or journal. We want articles that are true-to-life accounts of the fishing and hunting adventures.
Articles should include information covering the guns, gear, clothing, footwear, cameras, and any special permits and health procedures required and used as well as summary information on the PH(s), field/lodge staff, and lodging facilities.
This information should be woven into the text and not written as a laundry list. The following is a summary of the article categories for which we will consider submissions.
Hunting
Hunting adventures are the meat and potatoes of African Expedition Magazine (AXM) and we are always on the lookout for good stories about hunting any of Africa’s game.
An adventure isn’t always a charging lion or buffalo, sometimes it is days on end of struggle and tracking without success.
Fishing
African fishing is among the most challenging in the world, whether it is fishing in one of the continent’s lakes and streams or for the saltwater big game species that abound in coastal waters.
Guns, Gear and Gadgets
Informed product reviews are an important part of AXM but we do not accept reviews without prior assignment by the editor.
Proposals for product reviews should be submitted by email and include the contact person at the firm providing the product to confirm the proposed review. Proposed reviews of products purchased by the author must include proof of purchase.
Lodge and Destination Reviews
Reviews of lodging facilities or destination camps will be considered only after the author’s visit and must include signed permission by the owner/manager for AXM to publish the article, photos, and video. AXM does not make assignments for lodge or destination reviews before the author’s trip without the approval and cooperation of the facility’s management.
Book and Video Reviews
Qualified reviews of both video productions and books are vital information sources for AXM readers. When reviewing a video the subject must be Africa or have a strong connection to the African adventure. The author/reviewer must be knowledgeable in video production.
Book reviews are the lifeblood of AXM. Readers want information, history, where to and how to and to be entertained. Not all reviews are of recent releases. Reviews of past published works of note, whether about an individual, an event, or a work of fiction will be considered so long as most of the work’s content has an African connection.
Reviews of this type should be semi-scholarly. Sources of information, and quotes from the work, must be annotated and indexed. If the work is still in copyright “permission to publish” must be obtained from the holder.
The work, either in original form, or reproduction (reprint) must be available through either online booksellers or electronically. The writing style should be easy to understand and not rely on academic jargon. A sidebar of information about the book’s original author is preferred but not required.
Recent Releases
Proposals to review a recently published new work, whether a self-published, POD, or traditional publisher must include a “permission to publish” agreement when submitting a proposal to AXM editors. The proposal should include information about the reviewer’s qualifications for reviewing the book, such as a reviewer of a book on African gunsmithing is expected to know and understand gunsmithing. The same applies to hunting, fishing, or other fields of expertise.
Whenever possible a sidebar about the book’s author with personal quotes about the work is desired.
Note:
Reviews of recently published works should include (if possible) an environmental photograph of the author—preferably not a mug shot. Photos of the book should be more imaginative than a single photograph of the book cover.
Recipes and/or Cookbooks
Recipes and Cookbook reviews will be considered. All the recipes (individually or in a book) must be authentic African cuisine however the ideal is for the dish(s) to be preparable in other parts of the world.
Original Short Fiction or Poetry
Original short fiction and poetry will be considered providing the subject and/or content is about some aspect of Africa. Query first with a writing sample.
Essays and/or Opinions.
Original work or previously published work of note will be considered although AXM will require a “protect from harm” from the author(s) if of controversial content.
AI Generated Works
Due to the continued growth and use of Artificial Intelligence (AI) to create new works of writing and the growing controversy surrounding the use of AI to create a written work that may not be in the best interest of the readers and viewers.
African Expedition Magazine uses AI search and exposure tools and have have taken the following position:
- All submissions will be subjected to an AI exposure tool before acceptance.
- Any submission found to contain text produced by AI will be immediately rejected.
- Any previously published works now on the AXM website found to contain text produced by AI will be removed from the site.
- Any press release, promotional material, or advertisement found to be produced by AI will be rejected.

Submission Requirements
Text
Microsoft .doc/.docx for texts. If another text form is used contact the editor before submitting.
Font
Use a standard font such as for typing, do not use any script or art font. Boldface, underlining, and italics should be used for emphasis only.
Font Size
Use 11 or 12-point typeface only.
Photos
Preferred format is jpeg
Arts/Maps
For original art, paintings, or line art, .JPG is the preferred format.
Videos
For videos, embedded or separate submissions use MP4 in 1920×1019 resolution.
Article Length
Feature articles, no minimum or maximum. Sidebars should be under 1,000 words.
Book Reviews
500 to 2500 words, sidebars under 1,000 words.
Essays/Opinions
1000 words. Short fiction 3,000 words. Poetry: 100 lines or less.
Copyright
All submitted materials must be accompanied by an Intellectual Property cession signed by the creator.
